Product Information
The cabasa delivers a distinctive shaker sound through a textured steel bead chain wrapped around a cylindrical metal shell. Originating from Latin American music traditions, this hand percussion instrument produces its characteristic rasping timbre when the chain is rotated against the cylinder's ridged surface. The wooden handle allows precise control over speed and pressure, translating directly into dynamic range and tonal variation that cuts through ensemble arrangements.
The instrument's construction centres on a steel chain with hundreds of individual beads that contact a grooved metal cylinder mounted on a wooden shaft. Players grip the handle with one hand while rotating the cylinder with the other, or hold the handle stationary and spin the beaded chain for different articulations. The metal–on–metal contact generates bright, sustained rattling tones that respond to playing pressure, from gentle swishes to aggressive scrapes. Traditional models typically measure around 15cm in diameter with handle lengths between 10–12cm.
