The Meinl Sonic Energy 30" Kun Wind Gong is a handcrafted bronze instrument made in China using traditional methods and a special bronze alloy. Its almost flat profile allows the gong's voice to fully open, delivering a wide tonal spectrum and exceptionally long sustain. This 75 cm diameter gong produces predominantly low-pitched tones when struck softly, while more forceful playing reveals cascading wave-like overtones that resonate through the instrument's specially formulated bronze construction.
The gong's special bronze alloy composition and time-honoured manufacturing process create a tonal character distinct from Western–style tam-tams. Lower frequencies dominate the sonic profile during gentle play, expanding into complex harmonic overtones as strike intensity increases. The included beater is sized specifically for this 30" diameter, ensuring optimal tone production across the gong's frequency range. A protective cover accompanies each instrument, safeguarding the bronze surface during transport and storage between sessions.
Also known as a Feng or Sun Gong, this instrument embodies the Kun trigram from Chinese philosophy, representing earth and feminine energy. The flat surface geometry allows maximum vibration transfer throughout the 75 cm bronze disc, producing sustained resonance that can fill large spaces. This design contrasts with raised-centre gongs, offering players access to a broader range of overtones and longer decay times that suit sound healing, meditation practice, and ambient recording applications.
