Product Information
Meinl's Artist Series bongos bear the signature of William "Kachiro" Thompson, a percussionist whose rhythmic precision and tonal sensibility shaped these drums from the ground up. Built with hand-selected shells and premium bearing edges, this blue finish model prioritises authentic Latin and Afro-Caribbean voice without compromise. The defining feature is Meinl's natural wood construction–each drum responds directly to hand strike with minimal dampening, delivering the resonance serious players expect.
Both drums feature traditional bearing edge geometry that maximises head vibration and tonal clarity across the frequency spectrum. The macho (larger drum) sits at approximately 8.5 inches diameter, while the hembra (smaller) measures roughly 7 inches–proportions proven to cut through ensemble settings. Meinl pairs these with calfskin heads pre-tensioned to sit between the classic wooden hoops, allowing quick fine-tuning via standard lugs. The blue lacquer finish resists fading under stage lights and handles humidity shifts common in Australian venues and studios.
Thompson's signature appears on the shell itself, a subtle mark of instrument lineage rather than marketing flourish. These bongos suit working musicians who gig regularly, producers layering percussion into recordings, and rhythm players building vocabulary beyond drum kit patterns. The acoustic throw and sustain make them equally useful for rehearsal spaces and formal performances.
