Product Information

The Meinl 13" Taku Hirano Hand-Bale cajón brings the signature design of Japanese percussionist Taku Hirano to Meinl's Artist Series. This instrument ditches the traditional stick–based playing method entirely, favouring hand–only techniques. The patented hand–bale rim geometry sets it apart: one half follows conventional shaping while the opposing half recesses below the shell, creating a unique playing surface optimised for finger and palm strikes without any stick contact.

Construction centres on the specially engineered rim design (CN, TH, US patent) paired with a robust mounting clamp to ensure stability during performance. The logo sits applied from underneath the head, keeping the striking surface unobstructed. Model MHT13BK delivers a 13" diameter body in black finish. The recessed rim half allows players to exploit tonal variety across different striking zones, essential for hand–percussion technique that demands precise control and sensitivity. This design choice directly influences how sound projects and resonates, distinguishing it from conventional cajóns built around stick articulation.

The Hand–Bale series suits percussionists exploring hand–drum vocabulary within a compact, portable cajón format. Players transitioning from djembes, frame drums, or tabla find the tactile feedback and palm–responsive construction particularly suited to nuanced dynamic playing. The absence of stick marks or stick–related wear extends instrument longevity, whilst the recessed rim geometry provides ergonomic contact points unavailable on traditional designs.
