Product Information
Gibson's J-185 has occupied an unusual space in the maker's acoustic lineage–less celebrated than the J-45 or SJ-200, yet regarded by serious players as one of the finest-sounding jumbos Gibson has produced. The J-185 Century 12-Fret reinterprets that platform with a structural shift: moving the neck-to-body joint from 14 frets to 12 frets shortens the neck, repositions the bridge plate closer to the body's widest point, and unlocks enhanced top movement. The result favours fingerstyle work and lighter, articulate playing techniques with a warm, responsive voice rarely found in contemporary production acoustics.
Construction centres on a mahogany back and sides with a Sitka spruce top, bound in single-ply cream, and sits atop a 628.7 mm scale length–standard for Gibson's classic designs. The mahogany neck employs the SlimTaper 12-fret profile and connects via compound dovetail joint secured with hot hide glue, Gibson's traditional method. Hardware includes open-back Golden Age tuners with cream buttons, a sloped-rectangle rosewood bridge, bone nut and saddle, and TUSQ® bridge pins. The 19-fret rosewood fingerboard carries understated mother-of-pearl dots, whilst hand-applied satin nitrocellulose lacquer in Vintage Sunburst provides the finish. The instrument ships in a premium tweed hardshell case and is available in left-handed configuration.
Twelve-fret jumbos remain uncommon; this Century Collection release extends access to a tonal character historically confined to specialist instruments and vintage examples. The geometry yields particular advantages for players seeking harmonic responsiveness and reduced finger reach without sacrificing projection or depth.
