Product Information

The Gibson J-185 Century 12-Fret stands apart as a 12-fret jumbo interpretation of a model that's long been regarded among experienced players as one of Gibson's finest-sounding acoustics. Originally introduced in 1951, the J-185 borrows its body outline from the celebrated 1920s L-5 designs. This left-handed variant shifts to a 12-fret neck-to-body joint instead of the standard 14-fret configuration, moving the bridge plate closer to the body's widest point and shortening the neck–a layout that enhances top movement and reduces reach.

The mahogany back and sides pair with a Sitka spruce top, bound with single-ply cream edging on top and back. The mahogany neck features Gibson's SlimTaper 12-fret profile and connects via compound dovetail joint with hot hide glue at the 12th fret. Scale length is 628.7 mm with 19 frets and understated mother-of-pearl dot markers. Hardware includes open-back Golden Age strap tuners with cream buttons, a sloped rosewood bridge with TUSQ® pins, and bone nut and saddle. The hand-applied satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish in Ebony is complemented by an early-1900s Gibson script headstock decal.

The 12-fret configuration creates a notably warm and responsive voice suited to fingerstyle and lighter playing techniques, with top movement that makes a measurable tonal difference compared to standard 14-fret designs. Left-handed players gain access to a relatively uncommon instrument that delivers the full-bodied character only a 12-fret jumbo can provide. The guitar ships in a premium Century Collection tweed hardshell case.
