Product Information
First introduced in 1976 and now optimised for modern players, this four–string bass from Ernie Ball Music Man combines the iconic StingRay design with updated hardware and electronics. The StingRay Special features a sculpted neck joint that provides uninhibited access to all 22 stainless steel frets, while enhanced body contours deliver greater comfort without sacrificing the signature sound that's made this instrument a studio and stage mainstay for over four decades. The roasted maple neck is finished with gunstock oil and hand–rubbed wax, topped with a roasted maple fretboard and matched to the gloss black polyester body finish.
At the heart of this bass sits a single humbucking pickup with neodymium magnets, delivering increased output and tonal range compared to traditional designs. The 18–volt 3–band active preamp provides extensive headroom for clean amplification, with volume, treble, mid, and bass controls that span everything from vintage warmth to contemporary punch. The 34–inch scale length and 11–inch neck radius sit within dimensions of 13.5 inches wide, 1.625 inches thick, and 44.875 inches long. Custom Music Man lightweight tuning machines with tapered string posts and an ergonomic clover design contribute to improved weight distribution, while the vintage Music Man chrome–plated bridge and 5–bolt neck attachment ensure tuning stability and sustained resonance.
The weight reduction achieved through select body woods, refined contours, and lightweight hardware makes extended playing sessions more comfortable while maintaining structural integrity. The adjustable truss rod requires no component or string removal for setup changes. A chrome–plated aluminium control cover provides electronic shielding, and the 1–11/16–inch nut width opens to 2.5 inches at the 22nd fret. This StingRay Special ships strung with 45w–65w–80w–100w gauge strings and includes the 3+1 tuning key configuration and oval pickguard that have defined the model since its original release.
