When Mike Upton founded Kala ukuleles in Hawaii in 2005, he wanted to capture the spirit of this versatile little instrument. Now, with the company settled in Petaluma, California, Upton has combined his forward-thinking innovations with the traditional tonewoods and crafting techniques of the uke's island home. The Makala line takes Upton's decades of expertise crafting inspiring instruments, and makes it affordable for the beginner player.

This philosophy is evident in the name. 'Makala', derived from the Hawaiian word 'Makalani' (eye of heaven), means to set free. It's the perfect designation for an entry-level ukulele designed to deliver a level of sound and playability without the compromises usually associated with the 'budget' price-point. Just like their more expensive siblings, these ukes are nimble and expressive, and suitable even for intermediate players.

Makala ukuleles are the perfect companion for fire-side singalongs, epic journeys, and solitary reflection. They bring the wonder of music in the weight and the size of a shoebox, and come in a different colour for every day of the week. Wonderfully affordable, these instruments are set to inspire a whole new generation of players of the 'dancing flea'.
