Shure

Sidney N. Shure founded The Shure Radio Company in Chicago in 1925. The company sold radio parts kits at a time when fully-assembled radios were prohibitively expensive. In 1929, the start of the Great Depression and the increased prevalence of factory-made radios meant the company had to downsize and begin distributing microphones for another manufacturer.

The company began researching microphones itself in 1931, and the following year released the Model 33N Two-Button Carbon Microphone. It went on to introduce the now-iconic Model 55 Unidyne Microphone in 1939, and in 1941 secured a contract to supply microphones to the United States armed forces during World War II. The T-17B would become the most widely used microphone of the U.S. Army and Navy, and the U.S. Military Standard was subsequently adopted for all of Shure's microphones.

The Unidyne III was released in 1959 (it became the SM57), and was followed in 1966 by the most popular microphone of all time: the SM58. No other product can claim to have been an industry standard for so long, and the SM58 is unlikely to be superseded any time soon. Ironically, the 'SM' in this stage workhorse actually stands for Studio Microphone!
