PreSonus was founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1995 by electrical engineering graduates Jim Odom and Brian Smith. The pair wanted to find solutions to engineering problems in the production of records, and so set up a workshop in Jim's garage. Their first product, the DCP-8, was an 8-channel digital dynamics processor that offered control over analogue audio with MIDI (an innovation the company patented).

In cooperation with KristalLabs Software, a Hamburg-based start-up, PreSonus developed the Studio One DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), and Capture live-recording software. They later acquired KristalLabs in 2009, with the German company becoming their software division. Studio One and Capture launched in 2009 along with the StudioLive digital mixer series.

PreSonus' current line-up of products encompasses a range of solutions for music production and performance. These include studio mixers and control surfaces, performance and MIDI controllers, audio and MIDI interfaces, and studio monitors and loudspeakers. Their software offerings too have expanded to encompass not only Studio One and Capture, but also the Notion and Progression of music composition and performance programs.
