Mike Upton worked for Hohner for 10 years and in 2003 was leading the design and production of a new line of ukuleles. Upton's expertise meant the instruments sounded incredible, but the master craftsman had bigger ideas than his role at Hohner allowed him to explore. With that in mind, Upton decided to start his own enterprise, Kala.

Kala ukuleles was founded in Hawaii in 2005, but has since settled in Petaluma, California. The company is not, however, just another uke brand. Upton's vision has helped to expand what is possible with a small-bodied stringed instrument. The U-Bass, developed in collaboration with Owen Holt, is one such example.

These short scale instruments, introduced in 2009, have made an enormous impact with their booming, upright-bass sound. Matched to a variety of tonewoods, the U-Bass range has come to typify the forward-thinking design and attention to tradition that the company's ukuleles are known for. So whether you're sitting on a beach, jamming in a train carriage, or just noodling in your own backyard, there's a Kala uke that's perfect for you.
